Pharmaceutical Industry Study Highlights how to Generate the Support and Resources Needed to Sustain an Effective Patient Adherence Program

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Dec. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- It is no secret that poor patient adherence to medical regimens leads to frequent re-hospitalizations, poor disease outcomes and increased health care costs.

Non-adherence is particularly a problem for the management of patients with chronic illness, according to the World Health Organization. The most common drivers behind nonadherence are financial and/or behavioral; the pharmaceutical industry has long worked to create effective patient adherence programs to overcome these formidable hurdles.

A recent Best Practices, LLC study found that many pharma companies are segmenting patients and customizing content to enhance the results of their adherence programs. In the primary research study, 80 percent of respondents cited some level of tailoring in their program portfolio, defined by segmentation of patients and subsequent customization of content to fit the segments. "We are tailoring and moving towards personalization by designing programs that can be customized depending on the target customer segments," said one participant, a vice president of marketing.

Research and consulting leader Best Practices, LLC undertook this study to explore how adherence leaders in pharma are ensuring they have the support and resources to create effective patient adherence programs. The report, "Gaining Support for Patient Adherence Programs and Effective Resource Allocation to Drive Adherence," provides evidence-based benchmarks to address questions such as:

The study collected insights from 20 respondents in managerial or higher level positions at leading companies with patient adherence programs.
