NRMP Pediatric Specialties Fall Match (PSFM) for Appointment Year 2019 is Largest in History

WASHINGTON, Dec. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) has released the results of the 2018 Pediatric Specialties Fall Match (PSFM) for appointment year 2019. The 2018 PSFM surpassed the records set in 2017 to become the largest in history with 1,476 applicants submitting program choices (a 34% increase), 777 programs (a 24% increase), 1,584 positions (a 33% increase), and 1,297 positions filled (a 32% increase).

The PSFM launched in 2009 when existing subspecialty Matches in Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Gastroenterology joined with new-to-the-Match subspecialties Pediatric Nephrology and Pediatric Pulmonology to create a combined Match. The Pediatric Specialties Spring Match was created at the same time with Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and Pediatric Rheumatology. However, this year PSFM was the only combined Pediatric Fellowship Match, including the seven subspecialties listed above along with Academic General Pediatrics, Child Abuse, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Pediatric Hospital Medicine, and Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Growth in PSFM has been significant: since the 2015 appointment year, the number of participating programs has increased by 83.7 percent, the number of applicants submitting program choices by 72.0 percent, the number of positions by 91.5 percent, and the number of positions filled by 85.2 percent. Academic General Pediatrics is the newest subspecialty, having joined PSFM this year.

"A robust Pediatric workforce is critical to ensuring the health of the nation's children," said NRMP President and CEO Mona Signer. "It is gratifying, therefore, to see our Match for Pediatric fellowship training grow each year, and by more than 1,000 positions over the last decade."

The NRMP Match
The Match uses a computerized mathematical algorithm to align the preferences of applicants with the preferences of program directors in order to fill training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals. Research on the NRMP algorithm was a basis for awarding The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 2012.
