Upcoming Mardi Gras Parades in Shreveport-Bossier to Celebrate Black History
SHREVEPORT, La., Dec. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Two of the earliest parades on the Carnival calendar in Shreveport-Bossier will honor the lives and achievements of black Americans. The Krewe of Sobek Parade ? the earliest parade of the 2019 Carnival season in Shreveport-Bossier ? will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. The parade begins at Fair Grounds Field and follows a route through the Queensborough neighborhood. This fun-filled afternoon features floats, bands, marching groups, drill teams, queens, kings, and more. Visitors looking for a great place to catch the parade should consider areas near the campus of Fair Park Middle School located at 3222 Greenwood Road in Shreveport.
The Krewe of Harambee Martin Luther King Jr. Day Mardi Gras Parade will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21 in downtown Shreveport. The parade begins near Shreveport Municipal Auditorium and travels through downtown Shreveport along Milam and Texas Streets. The parade will include marching bands, floats, dance troupes, drill teams, and more. Great spots to see the parade include the 500 block of Texas Street near the Caddo Parish Courthouse and the 600 block of Milam Street near the Capri Theatre. Following the parade, local high school marching bands traditionally gather on the steps of Shreveport Municipal Auditorium for an informal "battle of the bands." Shreveport Municipal Auditorium is located at 705 Elvis Presley Avenue in downtown Shreveport.
The Krewe of Sobek and Krewe of Harambee parades are just two of the seven outstanding Mardi Gras parades that are held annually in Shreveport-Bossier during the Carnival season period between Twelfth Night (Jan. 5) and Fat Tuesday (March 5). Shreveport-Bossier is home to some of the largest Mardi Gras parades in Louisiana, including the massive Krewe of Centaur Parade scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23, the Krewe of Gemini Parade scheduled for Saturday, March 2, and the Krewe of Highland Parade scheduled for Sunday, March 3.
