Alberta Grower's Romaine Tests Negative for E. Coli

LEDUC, Alberta, Nov. 26, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The results of a third-party analysis on newly harvested plant and packaged product from Vertical Growers Network (VGN) have come back negative for E. coli bacteria.

The Leduc-based hydroponic produce grower regularly submits products for testing as part of its ongoing safety program. The most recent analysis comes at a time when retailers across Canada are voluntarily recalling romaine lettuce after E. coli was found on a handful of imported products in Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick.

Hydroponic producers grow in a highly controlled, dirt-free environment, and greens are unlikely to transmit soil borne bacteria. The third-party testing company, Exova, confirmed that water samples also came back negative for E. coli.

"It is disconcerting that Canadian fresh produce growers who are regulated, inspected, and certified by CanadaGAP (CFIA) are grouped with a recall process based on US-based romaine growers and suppliers," said Jim Schroeder, VGN's CEO/CMO. "It's about time that suppliers, wholesalers, and retailers who are importing produce are held accountable to ensure the same stringent controls placed on Canadian growers are also placed on products coming in from the USA, Mexico, and offshore."

E. coli has not been found on Canadian-grown romaine. VGN follows strict food safety guidelines, employs an onsite food safety manager, ensures all staff receives specialized training, and subjects its produce to regular inspection.

While many hotels, restaurants and grocers continue to purchase VGN products due to its rigorous standards, the company believes the public should be well-informed about the current concerns around imported romaine.
