NPA Announces Study Findings with New Ways to Reduce Congestion for Livable Cities

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Parking Association (NPA) released a groundbreaking study that demonstrates how parking can be applied as a shared mobility solution to reduce congestion.

An Ecosystem Approach to Reducing Congestion explores the real causes of congestion and highlights how parking, in conjunction with other forms of mobility, optimizes infrastructure to effectively move people and goods in and out of cities.

The study commissioned by NPA was authored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLC (PwC). Executives from the firms Strategy&, Global Automotive Practice, and U.S. Mobility Practice served as the principal authors.

NPA President Christine Banning, IOM, CAE said, "Livable cities are vital for real estate development, employment and tourism. Together, we can reduce congestion with a new vision for cities that embraces shared solutions and an ecosystem approach to reducing congestion."

Banning added, "The PwC study debunks congestion myths, provides planners and cities with models and levers for reducing congestion and demonstrates how reducing or eliminating parking minimums and applying a park once philosophy can support intermodal transit within cities."

Banning leads NPA and its 2,500 members in representing all facets of the parking industry.

Study findings include:

Key study findings highlight several parking levers cities can use to reduce congestion, including:

Banning added, "The parking solutions that PwC have outlined are critical to a multimodal transportation system that supports vibrant and livable cities. Parking plays a key role in the transportation ecosystem and is a powerful tool to mitigate congestion, especially at the curb."

Private vehicles, public transportation, parking and infrastructure form the urban transportation ecosystem. Parking is the beginning and end-point of the first and last mile. Understanding how communities are served by this ecosystem can provide new insights into the city of the future and transportation solutions to meet the needs of a growing population.
