NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn Welcomes Director of Pediatric Urology

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Nov. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Grace S. Hyun, MD, a surgeon specializing in treating urological conditions in children and adolescents, has been appointed director of pediatric urology at NYU Langone Hospital?Brooklyn.

A clinical associate professor at NYU School of Medicine, Hyun treats urologic conditions in children younger than 18 years old, including circumcisions, hypospadias repairs that reposition the urethra, inguinal hernia repair to prevent the intestine from pushing into the groin, and removal of growths like tumors and urinary stones that can cause blockage and pain.

"Corrective surgery can be necessary in preteen boys when one or both testicles do not descend to the scrotum, as well as for varicocele, an enlargement of the veins near the scrotum?both conditions if untreated can be associated with infertility," says Hyun. "Most of these types of procedures can be done on an outpatient basis."

Prior to coming to Brooklyn, Hyun served as associate director of pediatric urology at Mount Sinai Medical Center.  A graduate of Cornell University Medical School, she completed her surgical internship and urology residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center-Weill Cornell, followed by a fellowship in pediatric urology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

A urinary tract infection in children and adolescents is a common problem that rarely requires surgery, but Hyun says most children need behavior and diet changes to prevent recurrence.

Hyun also works collaboratively with specialists in other disciplines. She participates in prenatal counseling when a urologic issue is identified during an ultrasound. This multidisciplinary approach between obstetrics and urology allows expectant parents to prepare for treatment after birth.
