MISS DIG 811 Pays Respect to Founder and First Executive Director, Michael G. Digon
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- MISS DIG 811 pays its respects to Michael G. Digon, the first executive director and founder of the MISS DIG System, the nation's first statewide damage prevention system.
Digon began his career with Consumers Power Company in 1951 and eventually worked his way up to general supervisor from 1976 to 1990. He simultaneously served as executive director of the MISS DIG System from 1970 to 1990. His achievements at MISS DIG include: organizing the overhead electric program; organizing and serving as the first president of the Michigan Utility Damage Prevention Association; and assisting in the development of and participating in the first American Public Works Association-sanctioned National Damage Prevention Symposium.
He received many awards, including the Certificate of Special Tribute from Governor James Blanchard as an "exemplary citizen who has devoted his talents to the safety and efficiency of utility systems in Michigan for over 20 years." He was also honored by P.Y. Lee, director general, Ministry of Communications, for his "contributions to establishing the first Dig Center in the Republic of China."
Digon was a resident of Horseshoe Lake in Hanover, Michigan, until his passing on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. He will be remembered for his dedication to eliminating damage to Michigan's underground infrastructure.
