Recovery Centers of America Commends Governor Wolf's Newest Initiative Against the Opioid Epidemic

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., Jan. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Recovery Centers of America (RCA), an addiction treatment provider focused on saving one million lives, applauds Governor Tom Wolf's latest effort in battling the opioid epidemic; the creation of an interactive data report system that provides opioid prescription and drug overdose information across the Commonwealth.

The Wolf Administration, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, launched the new interactive database, which uses information prescribers provide to the DOH's Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) as well as data from 152 of the 171 emergency departments statewide. The database helps the recently established Opioid Operational Command Center identify communities in real time that are experiencing spikes in overdoses, allowing it to respond quickly with state resources.

"We applaud Governor Wolf's administration taking yet another decisive step to slow the rate of overdose deaths in Pennsylvania," says Dr. Deni Carise, Chief Scientific Officer of Recovery Centers of America. "This new initiative unlocks data across municipalities in the Commonwealth to get lifesaving medical treatment to overdose victims when and where it is needed."

Dr. Carise added, "Reviving those who overdose offers individuals struggling with substance use disorders a second chance. This is critically important. It provides EMS professionals and families of loved ones seeking treatment for addiction the opportunity to continue getting help by accessing treatment facilities that provide integrated medical, psychiatric and clinical care to give people with this illness the best chance of long-term recovery. Everyone wins when treatment and recovery lead to a productive, healthy lifestyle for members of our communities."

The prescription information is collected through the PDMP, which allows physicians to look up a patient and see if there are other, sometimes multiple doctors who are prescribing frequently abused medications to that patient. This limits the potential for abuse. In the past, an individual patient could be getting a month supply of opioid medications from six different physicians in one month.

Just two weeks ago the governor declared a statewide disaster emergency to reduce the number of overdose deaths associated with opioid abuse by making it easier to access various treatment services, expanding access to PDMP and increasing access to life-saving opioid overdose reversal medications among other initiatives.
