Seaway Becomes the First Lock System in the World Equipped with Hands Free Mooring

ST-LAMBERT, QC, March 20, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - On the occasion of the opening of the Seaway's 2019 navigation season, the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the St. Lawrence Seaway with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Minister of Transport Marc Garneau, thanking past and present workers for their efforts in transforming the lock system into one of the most modern in the world.

The St. Lawrence Seaway is the first lock system in the world to operate Hands Free Mooring in its locks. This innovative system permits ships to be secured during a lockage by vacuum pads mounted on rails within the lock's walls, instead of being secured by traditional wire or rope lines. A limited number of media representatives will have the opportunity to tour the facilities, including the control center which manages the Hands Free Mooring system.

The Federal Kumano, which will serve as the opening vessel, will pay tribute to both the Seaway's anniversary and Fednav's 75th anniversary, one of the largest Canadian shipping companies.
