The $1,000 scholarship commemorates the life of 14-year-old Avonte Oquendo, and the surge of support that followed his disappearance from his Long Island City school in 2013. Avonte's story is a lesson in the power of compassion, and it prompted legislation designed to help families locate missing family members with autism, dementia, and other similar conditions for which wandering is a common trait. The legislation became law in New York in 2014, and was passed at the federal level in March of 2018 under "Kevin and Avonte's Law." With its annual scholarship, The Perecman Firm, P.L.L.C. hopes to keep Avonte's story alive, and support deserving students as they go on to earn an education and make an impact of their own.

Applications must be submitted no later than July 31, 2019, 11:59 EST. More Information about scholarship requirements and the full application form can be found here.
