Unifor disappointed after BC voters reject proportional representation
VANCOUVER, Dec. 20, 2018 /CNW/ - Unifor is disappointed with the referendum results but says it is hard to ignore that four in ten British Columbians wanted a fairer system of voting.
"Unifor members rose to the occasion, and despite falling short, we're proud of our role in the campaign to make B.C.'s elections fairer," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President.
Unifor allocated significant resources to the referendum campaign, including 13 full-time organizers dedicated to member education and mobilization. Unifor also helped lead the provincial proponent campaign through its role on the steering committee.
"We respect the results and the wishes of British Columbians?all British Columbians. The results also show that the campaign for a better democracy has deep support," said Joie Warnock, Unifor's Western Regional Director. "The government has an obligation to continue to engage with British Columbians to improve our voting system."
