Pennsylvania Soldiers' & Sailors' Home Celebrates Wreaths Across America

ANNVILLE, Pa., Dec. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the community and volunteers from the Pennsylvania Soldiers' & Sailors' Home in Erie will place wreaths on each of the 1,334 graves in its veterans cemetery in coordination with the national Wreaths Across America program on Saturday, Dec. 15. The annual event places wreaths at more than 1,400 locations across America, at sea and abroad to honor service members who have served and sacrificed.

"Participating in Wreaths Across America at the Pennsylvania Soldiers' and Sailors' Home reminds us of the sacrifices made, lives lost and history created that rest right here in our own veterans cemetery," said Maj. Gen. Tony Carrelli, Pennsylvania's adjutant general and head of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). "Generations of veterans have served and sacrificed so that we can enjoy our freedom. We are grateful to the local community for providing the wreaths and volunteer assistance to help us honor these American heroes."

The Pennsylvania Soldiers' & Sailors' Home is one of six veterans homes operated by the DMVA in Pennsylvania and the only one which maintains an active veterans cemetery. The home has traditionally held a ceremony to remember those interred in its cemetery, which was established in 1886 and includes graves dating back to the Civil War era.

About 50 volunteers, including some residents, will place the wreaths, which were generously funded by donations from individuals and organizations throughout the community.

Wreaths will be placed beginning at 10 a.m., with a ceremony in the chapel at noon.
