Federal Regulatory Report showcases transparency, accountability and progress on economic competitiveness

OTTAWA, Dec. 11, 2018 /CNW/ - An open and transparent federal regulatory system is part of the government's agenda for a competitive economy that works for all Canadians.

Today, the Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government, released the Annual Report to Parliament for the 2017 to 2018 Fiscal Year: Federal Regulatory Management Initiatives.

This second annual report to Parliament outlines the benefits and costs of significant federal regulations and fulfills the Government's commitment to provide updates on the regulatory system. It reports on the One-for-One Rule which requires government regulators to remove ? from their existing regulations ? an equal amount of administrative burden on business every time they introduce a regulation with new burden on business. The report also gives information on the Administrative Burden Baseline, which is the total number of administrative requirements found in federal regulations.

In its 2018 Fall Economic Statement, the government emphasized its ongoing commitment to modernizing Canada's regulatory system, making it more efficient, agile and less burdensome, while protecting the health, safety and environment of Canadians. A new suite of regulatory modernization initiatives will support innovation and economic growth, including an Annual Regulatory Modernization Bill, starting in 2019, that will remove outdated or duplicative legislative requirements.

The government is publicly measuring regulations at the front end with an annual report to Parliament, and will provide a yearly legislative vehicle for regulatory cleanup.

Regulatory modernization helps businesses to grow and compete in new markets, which means more jobs for Canadians and greater choices for consumers across the country.

Quote

"Streamlining Canada's regulatory system and reducing regulatory burden within Canada is all part of our government's plan to grow the economy, invest in middle class jobs, and offer real help to hard-working Canadians, all while protecting their health and the environment, and ensuring their safety."

The Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government
