Shine Communities and Baya Build Collaborate to Create the First Multi-Family Communities for Adults with Autism

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Shine plans to build 460 communities over the next 10 years, housing 50,000 adults with level 1 autism. These communities will include valuable life-skill development, mentoring, enrichment and vocational training programs. The collaboration focuses on building micro communities of 100 residents in each community throughout the United States. The plan incorporates in-home sensory technology and the latest in building and construction innovation to optimize housing, as well as social and professional integration.

"At Shine Communities, our focus is to provide a safe and secure environment that not only nurtures its inhabitants, but also uses every possible technology and method to propel their individual growth and integration into society," says Lance Checketts, vice president of Business Development at Shine Communities.

The collaboration intends to unite autism research agencies, legislators, public health agencies, as well as technology leaders, to contribute research and development to better understand the increasing prevalence of autism, as well as the accompanying complex social and environmental needs.

"This collaboration is ground-breaking as it combines innovation in construction, smart home technology and the development of communities to benefit a rapidly growing and underserved population," said Tom Few, vice president of Business Development at Vivint Smart Home. "We anticipate this initiative will attract additional stakeholders to contribute their efforts towards making an impact for the autism community."

More than 3.5 million Americans have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. In the U.S. alone, over 500,000 teens with autism will age into adulthood over the next decade, an estimated 15 percent increase in the past two years. Today, autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability with services currently costing U.S. citizens $236-262 billion annually.

According to the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD), approximately 67 percent of 200 families surveyed with young adults diagnosed with autism ages 18-22 did not have knowledge of transitional services. As a result, 73 percent required help with their job, 63 percent needed help with daily living skills, 78 percent did not know of agencies or professionals who can help them find work, and 74 percent wanted to work, with only 19 percent currently employed.

"Baya Build brings a radically novel method to build configurable structures with an open technology framework," said James Casper, founder of Baya Build. "Our process revolutionizes the building industry, enabling companies like Vivint Smart Home to integrate its technology into our structures for comprehensive monitoring of our communities. This is an extremely valuable collaboration for the independent autistic living population."
