Shegerian & Associates: New Report Suggests Wider Pay Gap Between Women and Men Than Previously Thought

NEW YORK and LOS ANGELES, Nov. 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- A new report, "Still a Man's Labor Market" published by the Institute for Women's Policy Research, IWPR, revealed that the pay gap between men and women is larger than previously thought.

Traditional measures of the gender pay gap often compare men and women's wages over a given year, and calculate that women earn 80 cents for every dollar that men earn. However, women are more likely to drop out of the workforce full-time to take care of children or other family members.

To capture the impact this has on the long-term, the newest report from IWPR compared men and women's wages over a fifteen-year period.  What they found was that over a fifteen-year period, women earn 49 cents for every dollar that men earn.

Carney Shegerian, the head of Los Angeles employment law firm Shegerian & Associates, noted that the findings show a need to address the understated inequality in the gender wage gap.

"Businesses need to consider how the gender pay gap impacts women, especially those who take time off to care for children and other family members," Shegerian says.  "It's time to make a change so that women aren't penalized for these decisions in their personal lives."

In the report, the earnings of individual women were tracked over three fifteen-year periods, from 1968-1982, 1983-1997, and 2001-2015.  Between 1968-1982, women's earnings were 19% of men's, between 1983-1997, that rose to 38%, and from 2001-2015, women's earnings rose to 49% of men's.

The gap is so large because women are much more likely to take off from full-time work.  Between 2001 and 2015, 43% of women had a year with no earnings, while only 23% of men did.  Not only are women more likely to take off from work, but are punished for it more as well.
