CTF-FCE condemns abolition of French-language institutions and services in Ontario
OTTAWA, Nov. 27, 2018 /CNW/ - The Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF-FCE) is deeply shocked by the Government of Ontario's decision to cut services to French-speaking Ontarians and deems it completely unacceptable. It is offering its support to the largest Francophone group in the province, the Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco?ontariens (AEFO), as it takes up the struggle to defend Francophones' rights.
"This decision marks a major step backwards for French-speaking Ontarians and has left the whole of French-speaking Canada distressed at the news. As part of their role in society, Canada's teachers advocate for respect for human rights and social justice in all its forms. These fundamental values have been trampled on in Ontario, and that is a very serious concern for us," says CTF-FCE Vice?President Heidi Yetman.
The Assemblée de la francophonie de l'Ontario (AFO) deplores the Government of Ontario's decisions announced on November 15, 2018, as part of its economic update. The abolition of the Office of the French Language Services Commissioner and the cancellation of plans to open a French-language university in Ontario will have a far-reaching impact on the vitality of Ontario's French-speaking community and on the province as a whole.
The CTF-FCE will be closely monitoring the resistance campaign being organized by the Assemblée de la francophonie de l'Ontario and we call on you to do the same and to take part.
