Statement by Minister Rodriguez on Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas
Today, members of Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities in Canada and around the world celebrate Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas
OTTAWA, Nov. 7, 2018 /CNW/ - Today, members of Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities in Canada and around the world celebrate Diwali, also known as the Festival of lights, and Bandi Chhor Divas.
These celebrations symbolize the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. During this time of reflection marked by compassion and love for the world around us, family and friends gather to light diyas, attend religious ceremonies, share meals and exchange gifts.
Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas present a wonderful opportunity for all Canadians to learn more about the rich culture of our country's Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities. This year, as we mark the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, we would like to thank members of those communities for helping build the welcoming, diverse, inclusive and prosperous country we know today.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, I wish a happy and luminous festival to everyone celebrating Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas.
