National Distance Learning Week at Berkeley College Recognizes 20 Years of Innovation and Growth in Online Education

As Berkeley College celebrates National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) November 5 to November 9, 2018, in accordance with the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA), it recognizes the growth in online learning Berkeley College has experienced over the past 20 years. During the fall 2018 semester, 45 percent of Berkeley College undergraduates are enrolled in at least one online class. Nineteen percent of Berkeley College undergraduates and 95 percent of the graduate students are earning their degrees online.

"As a pioneer in online teaching and learning, Berkeley College provides students with dynamic experiences and flexible options for pursuing higher education," said Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College.

NDLW highlights worldwide content that features distance-learning accomplishments from all sectors including pre-K-12, higher education, corporate, government/military and telehealth. As part of the celebration, Berkeley College is offering students a number of online-related activities that include the Online Film Club's selection "Ready, Player One," an Online Fall Art & Creativity Festival; an Online Scavenger Hunt; virtual community service opportunities; an online essay contest, and a Virtual Interview Day. The Online Book Club will feature a faculty panel discussion titled "Virtual Reality in Education." The panelists will discuss the future of distance education as virtual reality technology becomes more mainstream.

"Berkeley College has come a long way in online teaching and learning," said Joseph Scuralli, DPS, Dean, Berkeley College Online. "We have had many successes, including earning the USDLA continued Quality Standards certification status. Today Berkeley College offers more than 200 courses online, and our initiatives to improve the quality of our students' experiences continue."

For the past five years, 2014-2018, Berkeley College has been cited by U.S News & World Report for Best Online Bachelor's Programs and Best Online Bachelor's Programs for Veterans.

In honor of 20 years of excellence online, Berkeley College Online® set out to make a difference, one month at a time, choosing community services efforts to benefit activities and organizations that characterized excellence in the services they offer for the benefit of others. Donations were collected for men, women, children, and pets. Efforts included food collections for the homeless, pet supplies for rescue animals, plastic caps to create buddy benches, Band-Aids for pediatric cancer patients, and toiletries and undergarments for disadvantaged individuals.

Year-round, Berkeley College Online® campus life experiences include online clubs, social media engagement, wellness and personal development programs, and workshops focusing on student success. All of the student support services such as Academic Advisement, Library, the Center for Academic Success, and Career Services are available to online students as well as to students on site. Berkeley College Online students are also invited to apply for the Berkeley College Honors Program.
