Wounded Warriors Connect with Nature, Each Other at Full-Moon Paddle

MIAMI, Oct. 24, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Wounded warriors and their families enjoyed a spectacular evening in Miami's Intracoastal Waterway. Wounded warriors and their families enjoyed a spectacular evening in Miami's Intracoastal Waterway. Led by Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP), the group gathered to watch the sunset and the rise of the full moon, topping that off with a guided kayaking tour of Pelican Harbor Island.

Once the group arrived at the island, they had the opportunity to take pictures and enjoy the views. WWP staff carefully planned the outing to coincide with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: It was not only a full moon but also the longest lunar eclipse seen this century.

"The opportunity to kayak at night with my wife and Wounded Warrior Project friends was very interesting to me," said Alfredo Guevara, retired Army intelligence officer. "I usually don't do many night events, but I researched the area and it seemed that it would be a cool event to attend."

Alfredo has attended previous WWP gatherings, including a Soldier Ride® cycling event in Miami. WWP organizes connection events for injured veterans and their families to help warriors cope with stress and emotional concerns while remaining physically active.

"I met a few new people, and my wife reconnected with an old friend from the Navy, so that was really nice," Alfredo added.

Ingrid Lopez, spouse and caregiver of wounded warrior Rafael Lopez, said she signed up for the paddle with the objective of "photographing the moon." She got her photos and experienced the bonus of meeting friendly people.

Pelican Island, a 10-acre nature preserve and bird sanctuary, is near downtown Miami, 400 yards offshore in the Intracoastal Waterway. The area is relatively easy to access and offers veterans a chance to enjoy nature while staying close to the city.
