Harlem United to Honor Soledad O' Brien and Douglas Brooks at 2018 Boulevard Bash Gala October 24th in New York City

NEW YORK, Oct. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On October 24th, Harlem United, a nationally recognized, community-focused healthcare, housing, and human services provider, will celebrate 30 years of service to New Yorkers with its 2018 Boulevard Bash Gala at the historic Low Library Rotunda at Columbia University, hosted by Bevy Smith.

Harlem United will honor Soledad O'Brien with the Community Champion Award in recognition of her outstanding leadership and tireless efforts to empower youth, and address social justice by bringing to the forefront narratives that affect underserved communities. Esteemed journalist and colleague, Tamron Hall will present the Community Champion Award to O'Brien to kick off the program.

In addition, Douglas M. Brooks of Gilead Sciences will receive the Impact Award to recognize his commitment to our community and being a catalyst to increasing HIV/AIDS awareness across the nation. The formal awards program will end with a special performance by hip hop icon, Doug E. Fresh paying tribute to the organization's humble beginnings in 1988, during the golden age of hip-hop art and culture.

From its roots, planted in the basement of a church in Harlem at the height of the AIDS crisis, Harlem United has grown to serve over 10,000 clients annually from New York's most vulnerable populations with a history of homelessness, chronic physical and mental health conditions, substance use disorder, and extreme poverty. Harlem United's innovative approach has become a national model of community-centered care, creating new opportunities for much needed programs and services to help clients lead stable and self-sustaining lives.

"We are excited to be celebrating Harlem United's 30 years of changing lives by helping marginalized communities improve their health and well-being through compassionate, client-centered care," says Jacquelyn Kilmer, CEO of Harlem United. "At Harlem United, we believe that everyone has the right to live their best possible life, and it is our intention to make that happen for the thousands of New Yorkers we serve. We look forward to our next chapter of providing transformative and life-saving services, for the next 30 years and beyond."

Funds raised from the 30th Anniversary Campaign and 2018 Boulevard Bash Gala will provide general operating support, and allow Harlem United to create an instructional kitchen at the Willis Green Jr. Community Health Center (123-125 W 124th Street), as the organization develops its first Workforce Development initiative with a culinary-arts job training program, while continuing to provide hot meals to low-income HIV-positive clients.

Details Summary: Harlem United's Boulevard Bash will be held on Wednesday, October 24th at the historic Low Library Rotunda at Columbia University. Cocktails will begin at 6pm, awards program to begin promptly at 7pm. For more information visit http://www.harlemunited.org/boulevard-bash.
