Congress Majority PAC Breaks New Ground -- It's a SuperPAC Whose TV Spots Mention No Candidate by Name, and Urge Viewers to Vote Democrat in the Mid-Term Election

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In a ground-breaking departure from traditional candidate-centered political ads, Congress Majority PAC is ignoring the conventional wisdom that all races are local. Their TV spots mention no candidate by name and aim to persuade swing voters that Democrats as a group provide smarter, better government. The SuperPAC has plans to run the same ads in multiple states and races.

Chuck Todd's opening words on NBC's Meet the Press on October 14 were, "Tip O'Neill famously said all politics is local. He was right then. Boy, is he wrong now. In the age of Trump, all politics is national."

Some of Congress Majority's spots undermine Republican ideology as oversimplified and flawed. Others point out that although there are more Democrats than Republicans, Republicans have been winning elections because more of them vote. They conclude by urging viewers to "Vote Democrat -- and this time, vote."

Congress Majority was founded by a scion of one of America's wealthiest families, Patrick Reynolds, a grandson of tobacco company founder RJ Reynolds and a longtime anti-smoking advocate. He says,

"Over the years I watched most Republicans in Congress refuse to tax or regulate tobacco. Under Obama, Democrats did both, and I came to see that Democrats did not adhere to a rigid ideology. Their approach was more pragmatic and targeted, and they offered superior policies on a wide array of issues. I used that argument in our ads.

"I believe that if we can get Democrats in the majority, it would be one-stop shopping for better policy on health care, education, climate change, the economy -- the list goes on. That's why my life's mission changed to helping to bring about a Democratic majority in Congress."

Most PACs are backed by powerful special interests with a vested interest in the outcome of a political campaign. "Not this PAC," says Reynolds. "So far, our funding has come from donors who have nothing to gain from their contributions except better government. They want to see our ads reach a wider audience, and help turn Congress blue again. Unlike the backers of many conservative PACs, our contributors are more interested in doing what's right for America and less interested in personal gain. That may become a wider trend in the country, and we hope to play a role in inspiring it."

Reynolds adds, "Our first ads will stand out; people will realize right away these spots are something unusual. We support the ads by other Democratic PACs, and we feel ours are a healthy addition to the mix. Adding our ads to the ones already running in Texas, Tennessee and North Dakota would be a Hail Mary pass that might just turn the Senate blue against the odds. We proposed this to the big Democratic PACs, including For Our Future, Senate Majority PAC and House Majority PAC, and are awaiting their response. I'm sure they'll agree our spots would complement and augment the ones they are running."

Congress Majority will run its ads in cities and states with close Congressional races. After the election, the SuperPAC will set its sights on the 2020 Presidential election, with its focus remaining on Congress. The PAC has already scripted new spots for 2020.
