AFGE Endorses Phil Bredesen for Senate

WASHINGTON, Oct. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the American Federation of Government Employees announced its endorsement of Phil Bredesen for election to the U.S. Senate this November representing Tennessee.

The nation's largest union representing federal workers, the American Federation of Government Employees, has endorsed Phil Bredesen for election to the U.S. Senate this November representing Tennessee.

"With federal workers under unprecedented attacks from Congress and the administration, it's vital to have a leader like Phil Bredesen represent Tennesseans in the Senate next year," said AFGE District 5 National Vice President David Mollett. "Phil has demonstrated time and again that he believes in the working class and will fight to protect their rights in Washington ? and that's why we're excited to announce our support of him today."

"As the former Mayor of Nashville and Governor of Tennessee, Phil knows what it takes to lead, and we know he'll use that experience to fight for a fully-funded and staffed VA and Social Security Administration and will push back against the outsourcing of government worker to high-priced contractors," said Mollett. "He will stand for all working Tennesseans, and he will stand up to those in Washington who seek to dismantle our public service and unions."

Nearly 50,000 federal workers live in Tennessee ? supporting the military, caring for veterans, ensuring the safety of the flying public, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.

"I'm honored to have earned the endorsement of AFGE," said Bredesen. "As a former mayor and a former governor, I'm deeply appreciative of the role that public employees play in keeping our government running at the local, state and national levels. As a U.S. Senator, I'll work hard to ensure that our federal employees are fairly compensated, with good benefits and professional working conditions. When I'm elected, AFGE can count on an open-door policy in our communications."

AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing 700,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. District 5 has more than 50,000 dues-paying members in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 700,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.
