Hunger Impact Partners' Trent Tucker Announces Hungry for Wins Champion Scholarships in Three School Districts

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Trent Tucker of Hunger Impact Partners (HIP), a Minneapolis-based non-profit focused on child hunger, announced today that the group is piloting school nutrition advocate scholarships in three Minnesota school districts to increase school meal participation.

The Hungry for Wins Champion Scholarships will be awarded to up to two students at each designated high school. They will receive a $2,000 scholarship for post-secondary education. The scholarship program will be piloted in Minneapolis, St. Paul and St. Cloud public schools.

Qualifying students must meet several criteria including writing an essay addressing the importance of food security, be engaged in school activities and have a personal interest in nutrition. Principals will select the scholarship winners.

"We know schools play a critical role in getting students the nutrition they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom," said Tucker, the former NBA and University of Minnesota basketball star who is HIP's director of stakeholder engagement. "Schools already have the expertise, experience and systems in place to provide meals to students and schools in high-need areas can help their bottom line by enrolling more kids."

Tucker explained that the Hungry for Wins Scholarship program promotes and reinforces nutrition messaging for success in the classroom, in athletic activities, in the arts and other after-school academic activities such as STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs. The project is aimed at encouraging schools to support nutrition programming, motivating students to eat school meals and urging parents to enroll students in school meal programs.

Schools selected to participate so far include Roosevelt and Edison High Schools in Minneapolis; Washington Technology in St. Paul and Apollo in St. Cloud.

The scholarship recipients will help lead a variety of programs including columns in student newspapers, social media posts, Parent Teacher Organization and community presentations, yearbook stories, coaches' meetings and photo essays.

Hunger Impact Partners is a statewide non-profit focused on closing the meal gap for kids from birth to age 18.  HIP partners with communities, schools, state agencies as well as the business and philanthropy sectors to increase access to nutritious food for Minnesota children. HIP's guiding principle is kids should only be hungry to learn.
