Scribd and The New York Times Introduce New Dual Subscription

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Scribd, the unlimited reading subscription service that provides access to the best books, audiobooks, newspapers and magazines, has collaborated with The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) to offer a new audience of readers the ultimate subscription bundle for staying well-informed and well-read. With this joint offering, subscribers will have unlimited digital access to The Times's award-winning journalism alongside premium books and audiobooks, all through a single subscription plan for $12.99 per month.

The Scribd and The New York Times bundle aims to offer a simple reading subscription that can be a part of readers' everyday lives, while growing subscriptions for both brands. Available to new subscribers starting today, the joint subscription provides unlimited access to Scribd's library of over one million books, audiobooks and articles as well as unlimited access to the NYTimes.com, The New York Times Digital Archive, and The New York Times app via its Basic Digital Access plan.

"We're thrilled to be working with The New York Times to provide the ultimate reading subscription for people who want to stay well-informed and indulge in their curiosity," said Trip Adler, CEO of Scribd. "Creating a bundle that benefits authors, journalists, publishers, and consumers is core to Scribd's mission -- we started with documents and added books, audiobooks, magazines and articles into our product. We're excited to expand this model and bundle with a trusted global news organization to offer a single subscription to one of the largest libraries of content, and the best of the written word."

Russell Kern, managing director, marketing partnerships, The New York Times, said, "As we continue to grow our subscription business, it's important to show potential subscribers that New York Times reporting reaches well beyond news and politics -- from Styles to Science, Culture to Climate to our investigative work. Scribd's engaged, diverse and global audience is the precise group we are looking to introduce to Times journalism."

The collaboration represents the first time Scribd is expanding its offering to give readers full access to a news publisher, and heralds a new type of bundling strategy which benefits publishers and consumers alike, while driving incremental revenue to the publishing ecosystem as a whole. For Scribd, The New York Times provides added value to readers, and furthers Scribd's mission to bring together the best of the written word in one subscription.

Scribd and The New York Times teamed up in 2017 to offer the "Essential Student Bundle," which offered students access to both subscription services for four months (one semester). Now, all new subscribers can take advantage of this dual subscription plan with a free 30-day trial for both services. Scribd's collaboration with The New York Times continues a string of major milestones for the company over the past year, including the rollout of its updated unlimited monthly subscription plan in February.

The service also surpassed 750,000 subscribers in 2018, growing 50% over the past year, and is continuing to expand rapidly. Today, Scribd draws in over 100 million unique visitors per month, and readers have spent a total of over 150 million hours reading on the platform to date.

Scribd is available across iOS and Android devices as well as web browsers for $8.99/month and $12.99/month for Scribd and The New York Times. For more information, please visit www.scribd.com/nytimes.
