AFGE Endorses Sen. Tina Smith for Senate

WASHINGTON, Oct. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the American Federation of Government Employees announced its endorsement of Sen. Tina Smith for election to the U.S. Senate this November.

The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union representing federal workers, has endorsed Sen. Tina Smith for election to the U.S. Senate this November.

"As a current senator and former lieutenant governor, Sen. Tina Smith has demonstrated incredible leadership and passion representing Minnesotans. That's why we're thrilled to announce our support for her today," said AFGE District 8 National Vice President Gregg James. "We know that if elected, Sen. Smith will fight for working people in Minnesota, and will ensure all the federal programs they rely on are protected."

"Already, Sen. Smith has pushed for fair pay for federal workers and was part of a strong coalition that wrote to President Trump opposing his union-busting Executive Orders," said James. "We know that if she's given a full term, Sen. Smith will protect programs like Social Security and Medicare for the hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans who need them, and she'll fight to protect the best health care system for our veterans ? the VA."

More than 32,000 federal workers live in Minnesota ? supporting the military, caring for veterans, ensuring the safety of the flying public, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time.

"I'm so honored to have the support of the American Federation of Government Employees and the hundreds of thousands of hardworking people it represents every day?from nurses to mechanics to park rangers to veterans," said Smith. "I have always been a strong supporter of public employees and believe they are entitled to fair pay and benefits. Our federal workers do incredible work for the people of Minnesota and I will continue to fight and stand up for them in the Senate every day."

AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing 700,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. District 8 has more than 10,000 dues-paying members in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
