More than 100 warriors and family members enjoyed the Milwaukee Air & Water Show recently with Wounded Warrior Project. The group gathered under the comfortable shade of a tent to share food and conversation with one another.

"This was my first time at the show and, after the wonderful experience, it won't be the last," said Yamilet Mendez-West, an injured Army sergeant who served for 10 years and is the mother of a 20-year-old.

"Considering where I have been mentally for the last few months, I probably would not have attended if the event tent had not been organized for us," Yamilet observed. "Being able to take part in events organized by Wounded Warrior Project has helped me deal with my depression and anxiety and feel better about interacting with others."

The Milwaukee Air & Water Show is a family event on the shores of Lake Michigan. Warriors and families who attended were thrilled with the water ski and speedboat demonstrations, and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds performance. A big reason to be there, however, was the opportunity to network with other warriors.

"I enjoyed the camaraderie and being able to meet other warriors and family members from different places," Yamilet said.

In a survey of the veterans WWP serves (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/survey), four in five respondents registered with the organization for social engagements and support. Connecting veterans with each other through fun opportunities gets them out of their homes, in places where WWP can help.
