Media Advisory - Government of Canada commemorates Canada's Hundred Days with Sunset Ceremony in Fredericton

FREDERICTON, Sept. 28, 2018 /CNW/ - Her Honour the Honourable Jocelyne Roy-Vienneau, Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick and Matt DeCourcey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Member of Parliament for Fredericton, New Brunswick, and senior representatives of the Canadian Armed Forces, will preside over a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Canal du Nord that took place during Canada's Hundred Days and the First World War.

Canada's Hundred Days are the final three months of the First World War. During this period, a series of Canadian Corps' victories on the Western Front solidified their reputation as elite shock troops. Canada's Hundred Days culminated with the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918.

During the ceremony on Saturday evening, a guard composed of Canadian Armed Forces members from across the country will join local members of the Royal Canadian Regiment from CFB Gagetown ? the Regiment of New Brunswick's Lt Milton Gregg, who earned the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Canal du Nord on September 28, 1918.

Veterans, representatives of local Indigenous groups, cadets and other area youth will also participate in the event.

On September 28 and 29, 2018, as part of a series of community-oriented commemorative events in Fredericton, Veterans Affairs Canada will host a hands-on forging workshop to create a commemorative sculpture. We encourage Veterans, still-serving Canadian Armed Forces members, youth and the general public to participate in this unique project. The completed sculpture will be unveiled during Veterans' Week 2018 in Ottawa.
