Public Service Announcement - Government of Canada commemorates Canada's Hundred Days with public events in Fredericton, NB

FREDERICTON, Sept. 27, 2018 /CNW/ - Veterans Affairs Canada invites you to public events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Canal du Nord that took place during Canada's Hundred Days and the First World War and to honour Victoria Cross recipient, Milton F. Gregg.

New Brunswick's Lieutenant Milton F. Gregg earned his Victoria Cross by bravely leading his unit through uncut barbed wire, despite being twice-wounded, to clear enemy trenches during this Canadian offensive.

On September 28 and 29, 2018, Veterans Affairs Canada will host a hands-on forging workshop to create a commemorative sculpture. We encourage Veterans, still-serving Canadian Armed Forces members, youth and the general public to participate and we are excited about the possibilities for this unique project. The completed sculpture will be unveiled during Veterans' Week 2018 in Ottawa.

On Friday, September 28, 2018, the Vimy Foundation will present the First World War Centennial Speaker Series with Dr. Lee Windsor of the Gregg Centre, an exhibit of enlarged colourized First World War photos and their short film, Return to Vimy.

On Saturday, September 29, 2018, the program will include a military Sunset Ceremony with a traditional offering from the local Indigenous community. A guard composed of Canadian Armed Forces members from across Canada whose regiments fought in Canada's  Hundred Days, as well as the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band and 3rd Field Artillery Regiment Band will also participate in the event.
