Antioch City Councilmember Monica Wilson Seeks to Make Contra Costa County a No Human Trafficking Zone

ANTIOCH, Calif., Sept. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Having sponsored an ordinance that was unanimously passed by the Antioch City Council regulating the City's massage therapy industry, Councilmember Monica Wilson will embark on a tour of all cities throughout Contra Costa County in an effort to align the cities with the City of Antioch's newly approved standards.

Under the City of Antioch's new ordinance, massage business owners must be certified and undergo background checks. Additionally, massage business owners must allow law enforcement and health officials onto their premises for unannounced health and safety inspections.

"My goal is to make it clear to human traffickers that Contra Costa County will not tolerate human trafficking," said Monica Wilson, Councilmember, City of Antioch. "By creating uniform ordinances, we create a network that will provide us the opportunity save victims who are forced to live in this form of modern slavery."

According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, every year, human trafficking generates billions of dollars in profits at the expense of victims. To date, it is estimated that there are 40.3 million victims of human trafficking throughout the world.

"Every single city in Contra Costa County is impacted by human trafficking," said Alexandra Madsen, Division Manager for The Alliance to End Abuse and the Contra Costa County Human Trafficking Coalition. "By working together, we increase the number of opportunities we have to touch individuals impacted by this crime."

Councilmember Wilson will begin visiting cities in October.
