Cato Reports May Same-store Sales Up 9%


CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cato Corporation (NYSE: CATO) today reported sales of $77.3 million for the four weeks ended June 2, 2018, a 4% increase from sales of $74.2 million for the four weeks ended May 27, 2017.  Same-store sales for the four weeks ended June 2, 2018 increased 9% from the four weeks ended June 3, 2017.  May 2018 same-store sales are compared to the four week period ended June 3, 2017 due to the 53rd week in fiscal 2017.

Sales for the seventeen weeks ended June 2, 2018 were $313.2 million, flat from sales of $311.9 million for the seventeen weeks ended May 27, 2017.  The Company's year-to-date same-store sales increased 1% compared to last year.  The seventeen weeks same-store sales are compared to the seventeen week period ended June 3, 2017 due to the 53rd week in fiscal 2017.

"May same-store stores significantly exceeded our expectations," stated John Cato, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer.  "We attribute a portion of the increase to pent up demand from the first quarter as the weather improved throughout May."    

As of June 2, 2018, the Company operated 1,351 stores in 33 states, compared to 1,373 stores in 33 states as of May 27, 2017.
