/R E P E A T -- Media Advisory - The Government of Canada Celebrates the National Historic Significance of the 1972 Summit Series/

WINNIPEG, MB, March 25, 2024 /CNW/ - Kevin Lamoureux, Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament for Winnipeg North, will take part in a Parks Canada and Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque unveiling ceremony to commemorate the national historic significance of the 1972 Summit Series in Winnipeg.

This Series between national hockey teams from Canada and the Soviet Union was the first time that Canadian professional hockey players faced the Soviet Union's national team. In eight games held in both Canada and the Soviet Union, the two teams brought starkly opposed playing styles to the ice. With the series and game tied in game eight, Canada went on to victory as Paul Henderson scored the tie-breaking goal with just 34 seconds left on the clock.

Ron Hallman, President & Chief Executive Officer of Parks Canada will also be in attendance to help mark the defining moment that brought all Canadians together to cheer for Team Canada.
