As Omicron subvariants continue their worldwide transmission, CoVaRR-Net awarded another year of funding

OTTAWA, Jan. 30, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- COVID-19, although no longer considered by the World Health Organization as a public-health emergency of international concern, remains a threat in Canada and worldwide. Although many discoveries have been made over the past three years, there remain many unanswered questions as subvariants continue to spread and affect people around the world. This is why the Coronavirus Variants Rapid Response Network (CoVaRR-Net) will continue focused activities with a final $6 million in funding from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR).

"CoVaRR-Net is an academic network that has provided a new model for cooperation in research across Canada," says CoVaRR-Net Executive Director Dr. Marc-André Langlois. The network unites 347 researchers and highly qualified personnel from 31 institutions across the country and provides end-to-end expertise from surveillance to public health guidance. It plays a major role in Canada to study, detect, and help protect against SARS-CoV-2 and has the expertise to address any virus, bacteria or fungus that enters our borders.

"Although not currently officially part of our mandate, CoVaRR-Net's Pillars and Major Initiatives have already started applying expertise gained during the pandemic to include more pathogens and many have already begun integrating more viruses," says Dr. Langlois, also Professor at the University of Ottawa and Chair of the Faculty of Medicine's Excellence in Pandemic Viruses and Preparedness Research.

Over the past year, CoVaRR-Net has been further strengthening its footprint in Canadian research. It is supporting many members' activities in the Canadian government's new research hubs to accelerate and bolster Canada's ability to biomanufacture vaccines and therapeutics, as well as in various other funded research initiatives with components related to pathogen surveillance and pandemic preparedness.

Some of CoVaRR-Net's priorities this upcoming year will include further enabling its Major Initiatives. This includes:

About CoVaRR-Net

The Coronavirus Variants Rapid Response Network (CoVaRR-Net) was created in March 2021 by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and has now been renewed for a third year to finalize SARS-CoV-2 research activities thanks to funding from the CIHR's Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies, in partnership with Health Canada (HC) and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). It is a network of interdisciplinary researchers from institutions across the country created to address the potential threat of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. Its mandate is to coordinate, facilitate, and accelerate rapid response research throughout Canada regarding variants, such as their increased transmissibility, likelihood to cause severe cases of COVID-19, and resistance to vaccines. The Network collaborates with federal and provincial public health decisionmakers and laboratories, as well as other national and international bodies in an effort to reduce virus transmission and keep Canadians safe. The Network is laying the foundations to evolve into an academic pandemic preparedness network that will foster close ties, collaborations, and relationships with public health laboratories, biomanufacturing facilities and hubs, and industry ? because everyone's contribution is critical during a pandemic.
