Canadian Retail Auto Sector Applauds New Steel and Aluminum Tariff Deal

OTTAWA, May 17, 2019 /CNW/ - The Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) congratulates the Canadian and the United States governments on today's trade deal to lift the devastating steel and aluminum tariffs. These tariffs have disrupted the integrated North-American supply chain and added unnecessary costs for businesses and consumers.

"The automobile industry has been particularly affected with steel and aluminum being key to vehicle production. Today's agreement by both governments' is good for the economy, good for consumers and good for dealers," states CADA CEO John White.

The removal of the steel and aluminum tariffs along with the automotive side letters negotiated under CUSMA represent a major achievement for Canada and the entire auto industry. "Today I spoke with the Prime Minister's Office and thanked them for maintaining a focus on getting the steel and aluminum tariffs dropped," said Huw Williams of CADA's Ottawa office. "The automotive side letter signed last fall was a significant achievement in protecting the auto sector and car consumers. This latest move to remove steel and aluminum tariffs is a great complement to the entire package."

The Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) is the national association for franchised automobile dealerships that sell new cars and trucks. Our 3,200 dealers represent a key sector of Canada's economy. Through our dealers, we are represented in nearly every community and those dealers collectively employ over 150,000 people across the country.
