Equitas Health Statement On Ohio's Six-Week Abortion Ban

COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 11, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- At Equitas Health, we champion the ability of our patients ? and all people ? to decide what is best for their bodies and to decide for themselves what path their lives may take. This basic right should not be criminalized, but that is exactly what Ohio's General Assembly has done with its recent passage of the six-week abortion ban, Senate Bill 23.

Equitas Health (formerly AIDS Resource Center Ohio) is a not-for-profit community-based healthcare system founded in 1984. Its expanded mission makes it one of the nation's largest HIV/lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) healthcare organizations. It serves more than 67,000 individuals in Ohio each year through its diverse healthcare and social service delivery system focused around: primary and specialized medical care, behavioral health, HIV/STI prevention, advocacy, and community health initiatives. Despite supporters' claims, bans like Senate Bill 23 will never decrease, nor have they ever decreased, the need for abortions. Instead, they criminalize physicians providing medical care and force people into dangerous, sometimes life-threatening situations.

Equitas Health believes that all people have a right to bodily autonomy and to self-determination, particularly when it comes to making personal medical decisions. The choice to seek an abortion is a deeply personal and difficult one and it is one that should remain between patients and their doctors.

Equitas Health aims to provide a gateway to good health for all of our patients and we will remain vigilant in our efforts to protect everyone's rights to control their medical and bodily decisions.
