PWTransit workers vote 100% in favour of strike action
OSHAWA, ON, Oct. 16, 2018 /CNW/ - Pacific Western Transit's failure to negotiate a fair contract means more than 73 transit workers could be on strike as of October 27 at midnight.
"Our members are proud to serve their communities in Durham," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. "Fairness for these workers needs to be a higher priority."
Unifor Local 222 represents transit drivers and maintenance workers at PWTransit servicing Beaverton, Brooklin, Cannington, Newmarket, Port Perry, Sunderland, Uxbridge, Whitby, and parts of Curtis, Oshawa and Pickering. The union is seeking similar wages and benefits as transit workers in neighbouring systems.
"PWTransit refuses to recognize the contribution our members make in keeping Durham moving," said Colin James, Local 222 President. "Unless something changes soon, PWTransit is putting negotiations on a path that will lead to service disruption."
