As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Widely regarded for his skill and experience in the field of pediatrics, Dr. Alper has served as a professor with Harvard Medical School since 1975. He is also heavily involved with the Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine (PCMM) at Boston Children's Hospital. As a senior investigator with the program, Dr. Alper maintains a focus on autoimmunity, immunology, pediatrics and genetics. This has led Dr. Alper to study autoimmunity as it relates to the genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and other genes of chromosome 6. His most recent focus as a researcher has involved working on a genetic model for Type 1 diabetes. After more than 55 years in the medical field, he believes he is now doing his most important work yet.

Noted for his invaluable contributions to scientific research, Dr. Alper has been credited with authoring or co-authoring hundreds of publications. One of his most recent works is a chapter entitled "Pedigree-Defined Haplotypes and Their Applications to Genetic Studies" in the 2017 book, "Haplotyping: Methods and Protocols." His articles have appeared in PLOS Genetics, the Journal of Autoimmunity, Immunobiology and Molecular Immunology, among other industry journals. Over the years, Dr. Alper has lent his knowledge and expertise as an editorial board member of Experimental and Clinical Immunogenetics, Tissue Antigens and Immunogenetics.

Born in 1931 in New York City, Dr. Alper wasted no time pursuing formal education. He attended Harvard University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in 1952, and a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, in 1956. From there, Dr. Alper completed an internship and residency at the Harvard medical services of the Boston City Hospital before pursuing a postdoctoral research fellowship at Malmö Allmänna Sjukhus in Sweden. Upon returning to the United States, he completed an additional research fellowship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital over the course of two years. Dr. Alper has been recognized as a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine since 1964.

Early in his career, Dr. Alper worked as a research associate in medicine at the Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital. He also fulfilled a brief appointment as scientific director of the Blood Grouping Laboratory in the early 1970s. After the merger of that organization with the Protein Foundation to form the Center for Blood Research, Dr. Alper became its Scientific Director and that of its successor organizations over the next 18 years. Beginning in 1969, Dr. Alper worked as an associate professor of pediatrics with Harvard Medical School until 1975, when he was appointed to the role of professor. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Alper has also served as a member of the adjunct faculty for The Rockefeller University and as vice president of the CBR Institute of Biomedical Research.

In recognition of his contributions as a pediatrician, educator and researcher, Dr. Alper was selected to receive a Merit Award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health for his work between 1990 and 2000. He was most recently named a Distinguished Humanitarian by Marquis Who's Who, as well as chosen as an honoree of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2017. Dr. Alper has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including the 65th edition of Who's Who in America, which was published in 2010. He maintains involvement with the Henry Kunkel Society, The American Association of Immunologists, the Association of American Physicians, The American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the American Federation for Clinical Research.
