CUB Marks Energy Awareness Month with Energy Quiz, $100 top prize

CHICAGO, Oct. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- To mark "Energy Awareness Month" and the upcoming "Energy Efficiency Day," the Citizens Utility Board (CUB), Illinois' top utility watchdog group, is offering state residents a myth-busting "Energy Quiz" for the chance to win $100 toward their October utility bills.

CUB launched the quiz Tuesday in honor of "Energy Awareness Month," during October,  and "Energy Efficiency Day," on Oct. 5. While the watchdog group hopes consumers enjoy the quiz, the purpose is serious: to bust myths about energy bills.

"Every day, CUB talks to people who pay higher utility bills because of energy scams, misunderstandings and myths," CUB Communications Director Jim Chilsen said. "We hope this quiz sparks a discussion about our energy bills, because what you don't know can cost you a lot of money."

Chilsen stressed that all quiz takers?whether they answer the quiz correctly or not?qualify for a giveaway in which one person will be randomly selected to win $100.  CUB will pick the winner at midnight Halloween, Oct. 31 (because energy myths are scary).

The consumer group based the quiz on thousands of inquiries it gets each year from people who have questions or complaints about their utility bills. The five-question quiz covers topics from energy efficiency to alternative electricity suppliers to utility disconnection.

CUB is Illinois' leading nonprofit utility watchdog. Created by the Illinois Legislature, CUB opened its doors in 1984 to represent the interests of residential and small-business utility customers. Since then, it has saved consumers more than $20 billion by helping to block rate hikes and secure refunds. For more information, call CUB's Consumer Hotline at 1-800-669-5556, or visit its award-winning website, www.CitizensUtilityBoard.org.
