Canada Lands Company dedicates new street to Stanley A. Milner

EDMONTON, Sept. 22, 2018 /CNW/ - Canada Lands Company in collaboration with the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment today officially named a new street in the Village at Griesbach community in honour of prominent Edmontonian Stanley A. Milner and the Milner family. The dedication ceremony marked another in a long line of community tributes recognizing the military legacy of the site and the achievements of Canadians associated with the armed forces.

Canada Lands Company (CNW Group/Canada Lands Company)

The Milner family represents an outstanding example of Alberta's service to Canada's military. Seven family members, including fathers, brothers and wives, served from World War I to Stanley Milner's work with the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment.

Stanley Milner exemplified his family's commitment to the military, serving in the 2nd Battalion, Saskatoon Light Infantry and the Canadian Officer Training Program. He also served as Honourary Colonel of the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment and founded the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment Foundation, a group which preserves regimental history and provides support for retired soldiers and military families. Mr. Milner was also a successful businessman, city alderman and philanthropist

Dignitaries included the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Mill Woods, John McBain, President and CEO of Canada Lands Company, Lieutenant-Colonel Mike Vernon, Deputy Commander of 41 Canadian Brigade Group, and representatives from the province and City of Edmonton. Following the remarks, Mr. Milner and his son, Kevin Milner, unveiled new street signs and a tribute plaque that will soon be installed at the site of the future Milner Crescent.

QUOTES

Minister Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Mill Woods.
"Marking the significant contribution of Edmontonians like Stanley A. Milner allows us to link the strength of our past with the promise of our future. The Milner family will continue to represent the very best of public service and encourage all of us to strive to better our community, our city, our province and our nation. Their ongoing influence will be felt for generations to come."

Stanley Milner, Honouree
"Being recognized in this area, the former Griesbach barracks, where so many of our military have served ? is a distinct honour.  When I think of my father who served in two World Wars, my brothers, sisters-in-law, and cousins who served Canada in World War II, it is particularly touching to see that my Regiment, The South Alberta Light Horse, is on parade today.  This recognition is particularly significant for our family as my brother Sergeant Tom Milner served with the Regiment and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.  I accept this honour remembering family members and members of the Regiment."

John McBain, President and CEO, Canada Lands Company
"Here in Edmonton and all across the country, we are incredibly humbled by the military contribution of Canadian families such as the Milners, and the opportunity to permanently recognize the important work of local veterans, residents and community groups."

Councillor Bev Esslinger, City of Edmonton
"Stanley Milner has always understood what it means to be a true Edmontonian, fighting for our Country, and helping build our City, and for that Griesbach is the perfect place to immortalize his name."
