NATP Voices Support for the Protecting Taxpayers Act

APPLETON, Wis., Sept 20, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) has voiced its support of the Protecting Taxpayers Act, S. 3278; a bipartisan bill sponsored by Senators Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and Ben Cardin, D-Md., which promotes more accountability to taxpayers by the IRS and attempts to revive the IRS's regulation of tax preparers.

In a September 20 letter to the sponsors, NATP stated, "We applaud the bipartisan work in drafting this legislation that goes a long way in addressing the required IRS changes that are needed to increase efficiency and protect the taxpayer. In our profession, we know what happens when a taxpayer has been helped by unqualified tax preparers or has had her information stolen by unscrupulous people."

NATP, an association serving 23,000 federal tax preparer members, believes that taxpayers need to know that they are being aided by a qualified preparer who will be held to a standard of competency.

Additionally, NATP specifically noted its support of the development of an IRS Management Board, a provision included in the Act. It is the belief of the association that a hands-on approach of such a Board would enhance the oversight process.

NATP commended the work of Senators Portman and Cardin and expressed hopefulness that the other Senators will join in supporting a prompt passage of this bill.
