MiRustm Wins Two 2018 Spine Technology Awards

ATLANTA, Sept. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- MiRus has won the Annual Spine Technology Awards for both of its initial products in the implant and navigation categories. The Spine Technology Awards are intended to bring increased recognition to exemplary and innovative spine surgery products and the engineering teams and inventors who create them. The awards will be presented to MiRus at the North American Spine Society meeting in Los Angeles September 26-29, 2018.

"The EUROPAtm Pedicle Screw System using MoRe® and titanium is the world's smallest thoracolumbar system and represents an important advancement in MIS spine surgery," said Kornelis Poelstra, MD, PhD, orthopaedic surgeon and president of the Spine Institute on the Emerald Coast, Fort Walton, Fla.  "The MoRe-inforcedtm system brings unmatched strength, fatigue resistance and biocompatibility to spine and orthopaedic surgery."

MiRus' GALILEOtm Spine Alignment Monitoring System also won accolades for its innovative approach. "The MiRus team previously developed the world's first wireless implant for heart failure and has now brought their electronics expertise and innovation to the growing segment of orthopedic navigation" said Thomas Morrison, MD, neurosurgeon at Polaris Spine & Neurosurgery, Atlanta, Ga. "We currently do not have the ability to assess spine alignment easily and dynamically while we do complex spine surgery, so the GALILEOtm System addresses an important unmet need."

Angad Singh, VP of Navigation, MiRus, said the award acknowledges MiRus' commitment to improve navigation with advanced technology. "We developed the GALILEOtm Navigation Platform to deliver more clinical value, reduce intra-operative radiation exposure, and eliminate the cost and complexity associated with traditional navigation. As an important component of this platform, the Spine Alignment Monitoring System provides real-time measurement and visualization of spinal alignment without reliance on repeated imaging."

Matthew McGirt, MD, neurosurgeon at Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, Charlotte, N. Car., noted, "MiRus is unique in providing a holistic solution to the problems in spine surgery; from superior implants to innovative approaches in navigation, SMARTtm implants for evaluating post-surgical patient outcomes and a comprehensive analytics platform. As the practice of spine surgery becomes more outcomes-driven with a focus on cost reduction, these advanced tools will be critical for physicians, payers, patients, healthcare administrators and policy makers."

"We are fortunate to have an outstanding worldwide group of spine surgeons helping our talented engineering team to develop these unique products which address important clinical needs. Our comprehensive strategy and goals are to bring innovation to the entire continuum of care with products, tools, and technologies that will benefit the providers and patients. The orthopedic market, especially spine, provides a significant opportunity for us to leverage key expertise in multiple clinical segments where we have demonstrated meaningful change and introduced significant disruptive technologies," stated Jay S. Yadav MD, Founder and CEO of MiRus, based in Atlanta, Ga.  MiRus was started by Dr. Yadav in late 2015 with an experienced executive team including Noah Roth, COO; Wayne Gray, Senior Director Implants, and Mahesh Krishnan, VP of Sales and Marketing.

About Spine Disease
Spine and orthopedic diseases are the major cause of pain and disability around the world with a high growth rate projected due to an aging and more active population. However, the market has stagnated with respect to technology and is ripe for disruption with adaption of latest hardware, software and metallurgical developments.

With an increased focus on MIS techniques in recent years, there is a continued interest in making implants smaller, thinner yet stronger. Most spine and orthopedic implants are made from Titanium or Cobalt Chromium (CoCr). MiRus has adapted Molybdenum Rhenium (MoRe®), a super-alloy primarily used in rocket nozzles and jet engines, for medical implants. MoRe® is over two times stronger, significantly more fatigue resistant, less recoil and generates significantly less wear debris than either Titanium or CoCr. In addition, MoRe® is twice as hydrophilic as Titanium which makes it an ideal alloy for 3D printed and coated interbodies which are gaining significant traction.

Surgeons are increasingly adapting to advances in navigation and robotics, yet today's navigation systems are large, expensive and use outmoded 30-year-old technology. With deep electrical and software expertise, MiRus has developed a disruptive navigation platform using the latest developments in MEMS sensors, computer vision, image fusion and augmented and mixed reality while minimizing the use of intra-operative CT and fluoroscopy.
