Launch of New Contour® Next One System in Australia That Effortlessly Logs Readings and Provides Personalised Feedback for People With Diabetes

ADELAIDE, Australia, August 22, 2018 /PRNewswire/ --

Ascensia Diabetes Care today announced the launch of the CONTOUR®NEXT ONE blood glucose monitoring system (BGMS) in Australia. The easy-to-use CONTOUR®NEXT ONE smart meter seamlessly connects to the CONTOUR®DIABETES app via Bluetooth® connectivity, which makes capturing highly accurate blood glucose readings effortless for people with diabetes. The app uses innovative algorithms to intelligently analyse blood glucose readings and delivers personalised meaningful feedback that is designed to help improve diabetes self-management.

The CONTOUR®DIABETES app collects, stores and analyses patient blood glucose readings received from the meter. Users can also record other data, such as meals, exercise and medications, that can provide context about their blood glucose readings and help them to understand how their everyday lives may impact their diabetes management.

The app includes the My Patterns feature which uses meter readings to identify sub-optimal patterns in blood glucose data that could lead a person to manage their diabetes differently. Once it has notified the person about the pattern, the app will suggest possible causes and provide guidance to help address it. It allows patients to set reminders or use structured testing plans to help improve their blood glucose readings and will track their progress to see if the pattern improves over time.

My Patterns has been developed using evidence-based behavioural science concepts from the Information, Motivation and Behavioural Skills (IMB) model of health behaviour change, pioneered by health psychologists Dr. William Fisher and Dr. Jeffrey Fisher. The app can recognise 14 different patterns and includes 11 different structured testing plans, and more patterns and testing plans will be added in the future.

Renza Scibilia, diabetes advocate and author of the Diabetogenic blog explained: "Self-management is critical in diabetes. One of the keys to effective diabetes self-management is to provide people with tools that can help them to understand how their lifestyle or activities affect their diabetes and how they can make adjustments. The new CONTOUR®NEXT ONE system is like a diabetes management coach in your pocket. The app collects highly accurate blood glucose readings from the meter, uses these readings to identify patterns and provides tailored reminders that can support improved self-management."

"In most cases, people with diabetes only spend a few hours a year with their doctor and the rest of the time they rely on self-management. They need to have the right tools to help them, so we wanted to provide a tool that seamlessly captures their data and provides them with personalised feedback about their condition," explained Bartosz Gajewski, Country Manager, Ascensia Diabetes Care Australia.

He added: "The CONTOUR®NEXT ONE blood glucose monitoring system is the latest of our high quality solutions designed to meet the needs of the diabetes community. The CONTOUR®NEXT ONE meter provides remarkable levels of accuracy and precision and the CONTOUR®DIABETES app provides a smarter tool that can help to make self-management of diabetes easier. We are very excited to be able to bring this new innovation to people with diabetes in Australia."

Through the app, people with diabetes can also share detailed reports of their blood glucose readings and patterns with their healthcare professional, either in advance or on the day of their appointment, helping to create more informed discussions.

The meter also includes additional features specifically designed to meet patient needs, including the smartLIGHT[TM] feature that gives instant feedback on blood glucose readings and Second-Chancetm sampling, which prompts blood to be reapplied if there is not enough the first time, helping to avoid lancing for a second time and the wasting of strips.

The CONTOUR®NEXT ONE blood glucose monitoring system has demonstrated consistently remarkable levels of accuracy and precision. Published study data has shown that it exceeds the ISO 15197:2013 accuracy criteria[1] in both the laboratory and clinical setting. The study showed that 95% of results were within ±0.47 mmol/L or ±8.4% of the laboratory reference values for glucose concentrations <5.55 mmol/L or ? 5.55 mmol/L respectively, when tested via subject obtained fingerstick results[2].
