American Society of Anesthesiologists and European Society of Anaesthesiology to Co-Convene 2019 World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Patient Safety Movement Foundation is happy to announce that the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) will co-convene the upcoming 7th Annual World Patient Safety, Science and Technology Summit, held in Huntington Beach, California, January 18-19, 2019.

The 2019 World Summit brings together leading medical experts, healthcare technology CEOs, global leaders and patient advocates from around the world to discuss challenges, innovative new programs and best practices to eliminate preventable patient deaths in hospitals. More than 4,500 hospitals from 44 countries across the globe have made commitments to the Patient Safety Movement Foundation and implemented evidence-based Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS), saving more than 81,533 lives last year alone.

"Medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States and 14th across the globe," explained Joe Kiani, founder, and chairman of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation. "Working hand in hand with leading medical societies like the ESA and ASA allows us to reach more decision-makers and bring our message and evidence-based solutions to save more lives around the world. Together, we can eliminate preventable harm occurring in hospitals."

The ASA and ESA are leading organizations representing anesthesia, critical care, pain and perioperative medicine in the United States and Europe. The mission of the ASA is to advance the practice of anesthesia and secure the future by creating world-class education and resources to improve patient care and outcomes. The ESA's work on the 2010 ESA-EBA Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology has been widely recognized globally as a practical framework for improving perioperative patient safety, and was signed by all European national anaesthesiologist societies and endorsed by many international societies.

"We're thrilled to join the Patient Safety Movement Foundation and ESA for this important and timely summit," said ASA President James D. Grant, M.D., M.B.A., FASA. "As leaders in patient safety, physician anesthesiologists are committed to developing and adopting processes that are proven to eliminate preventable patient deaths in hospitals. We look forward to working with these groups to continue the conversation to ensure this charge is met."

"The ESA is very proud to co-convene this summit with PSMF and ASA as patient safety has been the core of our activities since the launch of the Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology in 2010. It is our responsibility and that of everybody involved in healthcare to pursue the mission of eliminating preventable deaths," according to Stefan De Hert, ESA President and Zeev Goldik, ESA Vice-President.

The 7th Annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit will feature a keynote address from President Bill Clinton, and plenary sessions with healthcare luminaries, patient safety experts, members of the press and patient advocates, as well as announcements from organizations who have made their own commitments to reach the Patient Safety Movement Foundation's goal of ZERO preventable deaths by 2020.

About Patient Safety Movement Foundation:

More than 200,000 people die every year in U.S. hospitals and 4.8 million worldwide in ways that could have been prevented. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation is a global non-profit which creates free tools for patients and hospitals. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation was established through the support of the Masimo Foundation for Ethics, Innovation, and Competition in Healthcare to reduce that number of preventable deaths to ZERO by 2020 (0X2020tm). Improving patient safety will require a collaborative effort from all stakeholders, including patients, healthcare providers, medical technology companies, government, employers, and private payers. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation works with all stakeholders to address the problems with actionable solutions for patient safety. The Foundation also convenes the World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit. The Summit brings together some of the world's best minds for thought-provoking discussions and new ideas to challenge the status quo. By presenting specific, high-impact solutions to meet patient safety challenges, called Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, encouraging medical technology companies to share the data their products are purchased for, and asking hospitals to make commitments to implement Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, the Patient Safety Movement Foundation is working toward ZERO preventable deaths by 2020.
