Stay in Control of Your Home While on Vacation with Smart Upgrades

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, a family-owned home service company with an A+ rating by the BBB, recommends utilizing smart home automation features before leaving for vacation.

For Philly families traveling on late summer vacations, leaving their homes safe, secure and in a state of reduced energy consumption should be of paramount importance. Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning recommends smart home automation upgrades to save energy and enjoy peace of mind while on vacation.

"Many Philly homeowners will still be enjoying vacations before school starts back, and those without children in the home have even more time to get away," said Joseph Giannone, owner of Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning. "When the home is left vacant, however, utilities and overall security can remain a concern. Fortunately, smart home technology continues to advance and can provide real solutions for to put vacationers at ease."

Maximize efficiency and save energy

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment account for 48 percent of the energy usage of an average household.

"Rather than simply locking the doors and leaving for vacation, a good way to save on the energy bill while away is to install a smart thermostat," Giannone said.

Smart thermostats offer more precise time and temperature settings than a standard programmable thermostat and can be remotely controlled with a smart device. By setting the temperature between 80-85 degrees while away on vacation, and adjusting with a smartphone when necessary, the air conditioner will run less and save energy as a result. Connected apps are available as well that can help track the energy consumption of the home to further tailor remote decisions made regarding temperature settings.

Remain informed and secure

The U.S. Department of Justice reported in a crime victimization survey that 72 percent of burglaries happen during periods of vacancy.

A clearly vacant home has increased chances of becoming a target for vandalism and theft. Security cameras can be installed near windows and points of entry that broadcast live feeds to smart devices. Automation features, such as lighting controls and motorized curtains, can be employed to give the home the appearance of being occupied. When using lights to maintain security, dimmers and energy monitoring apps can be used to minimize their impact on the energy bill.

"Making a few small investments in smart home technology can help protect the biggest investment you have," Giannone said. "You'll save money on energy over time, have enhanced control over your home and enjoy an invaluable peace of mind while traveling."
