Good News: Torontonians Prolifically Paid-It-Forward with Caffeinated Kindness

Top TO Neighbourhoods for Pay-It-Forward Pride Revealed

TORONTO, Aug. 14, 2018 /CNW/ - As many Torontonians have spent the weekend wondering who was behind Tuesday's highly publicized pay-it-forward hit of caffeinated kindness, the 'mysterious benefactor' of the first #BuyTOaCoffeeDay has stepped forward to crown Toronto's kindest neighbourhoods.

With the support of local media and the public, #BuyTOaCoffeeDay quickly became a viral story both on and offline. The event was mentioned in local and national news (and radio as far away as Yellow Knife.) Even Toronto Mayor John Tory tweeted his support.

Torontonians did not disappoint and stepped up to pay it forward:

In total, Torontonians paid 770 coffees forward to their fellow residents.

The top most prolific pay-it-forward neighbourhoods were:

2) Uptown:

96 coffees - 9 Bars Coffee

3) Riverside:

86 coffees - Darkhorse Coffee

4) St. Lawrence Market:

79 coffees - Fahrenheit Coffee

5) Etobicoke:

75 coffees - The Big Guys Little Coffee Shop

Toronto's King of Caffeinated Kindness Is...

1) Fashion District - 250 coffees - Strange Love Coffee

Mysterious benefactor revealed: Chelle Service Capital Inc.

Though the campaign initially focussed on promoting the café's and asking Torontonians to pay-it-forward, the benefactor has come forward in order to satisfy local curiosity and challenge other Toronto businesses to do their part in creating some kindness during Toronto's difficult 2018 summer.

Media have speculated that the benefactor might be a coffee related company, an individual or even Pointman News Creation (Chelle's PR Agency). In fact, Chelle has been planning the event since late April after the Toronto van attack.

"We wanted to show that businesses can have a big impact even with smaller scale events to support the communities that they live and work in," said Ronice Harrison, President and CEO of Chelle Service Capital Inc. and a proud Torontonian. "It occurred to us that the humanitarian work our company traditionally supports through Land We Love is in Jamaica, but we weren't stepping up for Toronto during a particularly difficult time. We hope this small gesture brightened the day of our hometown."

Harrison is directly challenging other businesses that reside or work in Toronto to get similarly creative and pay-it-forward with random acts of kindness to support Torontonians.

"Our small, one day event had a big impact on the mornings of 1,870 Torontonians and inspired over 770 pay-it-forward acts of kindness, but we suspect it also got the attention of a lot of Canadian businesses," added Harrison. "We'd love to pass the torch and see other businesses do their part to pay-it-forward."

About #BuyTOaCoffeeDay:

#BuyTOaCoffeeDay sponsored 11 cafes across Toronto from Spadina, to St. Clair, to Scarborough giving away 100 coffees to the first patrons through their doors. The complimentary coffee had just one catch: each person to receive a free coffee was asked to pay the kindness forward to another local. The unofficial holiday was created as a way to bolster Toronto spirit during a difficult summer, encouraging locals to "dig deep and pay it forward... because we could all use a little extra kindness (and possibly caffeine)."
