The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, visits the new Champlain Bridge worksite

MONTREAL, Aug. 9, 2018 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada has committed to renewing critical infrastructure that contributes to economic growth and community development in the Greater Montreal area and across Canada.

The Honourable François?Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, visited the new Champlain Bridge worksite today for the first time.

During his visit, together with the team responsible for Infrastructure Canada's new Champlain Bridge corridor project and the private partner Signature on the Saint Lawrence (SSL), the Minister was able to see the progress of the work and all the human engineering involved. The Minister took the opportunity to meet not only the project management team, but also the proud builders on site.

The Government of Canada has committed to providing a new and high?quality toll?free Champlain Bridge, while ensuring the safety of users, the continuity of service and the sound management of public funds.

The new Champlain Bridge worksite is one of the largest in North America. In addition to ensuring the safety of users, the new Champlain Bridge corridor project will create thousands of jobs in the Greater Montreal area. It will also promote Canada's economic growth by improving connections across the road system and ensuring the continuous and safe flow of people and goods.

Throughout the construction of the new Champlain Bridge, we have worked closely with our partners and with the adjacent communities. We have kept them informed of progress and we have listened to their concerns. Over the past few months, a number of residents and stakeholders in the region have expressed the desire for the new bridge to be named Samuel?de Champlain. Prior to making any changes to the current name of the corridor, partners and the public will be further consulted to ensure the amendment is supported. Infrastructure Canada has recently started this process.

Quote

"Today I had the privilege of touring the worksite and meeting the management team and many of the builders of the new Champlain Bridge. I was impressed by not only the progress of the work, but also by the dedication of the workers. The construction of the new Champlain Bridge constitutes one of the largest worksites in North America and one of the most modern engineering and urban integration projects. This bridge, which will last 125 years, will undoubtedly make Montrealers, Quebecers and Canadians proud."

The Honourable François?Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities
