Financial Education Benefits Center Asks: Instead of Driving, Why Not Ride to Work?

SAN RAMON, Calif., July 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- There are so many approaches to fitness that sometimes people are too overwhelmed to get started. One simple idea is to transform an existing activity into a fitness activity. For example, those who live close enough to their workplace might consider riding to work on a bicycle rather than driving or riding public transportation. Commuting by bike is an excellent way to take something mundane and make it healthful and exhilarating. Financial Education Benefits Center encourages all its member to work toward healthy and active living. The company offers a wide variety of health and wellness benefits.

"Riding a bike to work is good for the body and the planet," said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC. "We highly encourage our clients to examine fitness activities that work for them, so that it is sustainable and fulfilling."

A first priority is always safety. Though an accident is unlikely, it is best for riders to give themselves every edge in safety. Commuters should always wear a helmet and brightly colored clothing as well as have blinking head and tail lights. Again, the first goal is always to get to work and then home safely.

It is also important to begin with an achievable distance and frequency. If the ride takes more than an hour on a bike, rather than a daunting round trip, a commuter may want to catch a ride with a co-worker in the morning, then ride their bike home. Also, even if the ride length is manageable, consider starting out by riding a couple days a week rather than thinking about cycling every day since that may not be sustainable.

Riders may want to scout out their ride on the weekend, so the first ride goes smoothly, taking care to minimize riding in high-traffic areas. It is also important to have a pump, tire levers and a spare tire, and to learn how to change a flat. A cyclist doesn't have to be late for work; if a bike has quick-release tires, a flat tire can be changed, after some practice, in five or 10 minutes.

Living close to work, less than 20 minutes riding, may mean it is possible to simply wear work clothes. For those who live farther, it might require bringing a change of clothes to work. Or, leave work clothes the day before, so they don't have to be hauled there. For those with longer rides, cycling shorts with a synthetic chamois will keep commuters more comfortable on their seat. Additionally, for those with longer rides, riding to work may require a shower, if one is available, or toweling off with some water and soap at a sink basin.

"You have to take time every morning to get to work anyway, why not try commuting on your bike?" said Martinez. "And if you have trouble finding an activity on your own, check out our health and wellness benefits. Our clients have taken steps toward financial health and we want to be sure they are taking care of their physical health as well."
