Dr. Nikesh Seth Pioneers Radiofrequency Ablation, Alternative Pain Treatments

Radiofrequency ablation is a relatively new treatment, having only been developed and promoted in the last 30 years. During the procedure, doctors use radio waves to induce an electric current in the affected nerve tissue, heating it and reducing the number of pain signals it transmits to the brain.

Using rats and computer models, they found that direct electric current can successfully block pain signals by targeting certain nerves.

Dr. Gene Fridman, an assistant professor at the School of Medicine, said the goal of this research is to take current radiofrequency ablation techniques and move them toward a neural implant model. Neural implants would allow doctors to excite or inhibit a patient's affected neurons, reducing pain or increasing sensitivity.

Currently, no permanent neural implants are available commercially.
In recent years, radiofrequency ablation has enjoyed a surge in research and application. An April 2018 report from Transparency Market Research predicts that the market for radiofrequency ablation devices will reach billions of dollars by 2024.
