Obviously search engine optimization is very important if you want people to find your site, but that doesn't mean you should sacrifice human optimization as well. Being cute and clever might seem fun to you, but for most visitors it is annoying because people don't have time to waste.
  4. Accommodate for human error. Unlike artificial intelligence, humans can and will make mistakes. That is something your site should anticipate and accommodate. One areas this is very common is the search function on a website. Expect people to misspell words and use an auto-suggest option. This is especially helpful to mobile users who are more prone to spelling mistakes simply because of the keyboard size.
  5. Use pop-ups triggered by behavior. In general pop-ups can be annoying. For that reason, they should not automatically pop-up the second a person lands on your site. After all, when they first arrive they are still trying to digest everything on page so why add one more thing? A better solution is to utilize behavior triggered pop-ups. For example, if a person has been on a page for a brief period and appears to be stuck (based on inactivity) then a "Need help" pop-up makes sense. You might use a "Special Offer" pop-up for people exiting the site without a purchase or action. Surveys can also be launched when people are leaving.
