Open Water Swimmer Abby Bergman Aims for Triple Crown Achievement

CULVER CITY, Calif., July 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Triple Crown of marathon swimming consists of three iconic and grueling open-water distance swims. Achieving the Triple Crown has been on Abby Bergman's bucket list from the age of 12. Now at 22, she has conquered the Catalina Channel and the English Channel, and is poised to tackle the  monumental 28.5 mile swim around the Island of Manhattan on Saturday, July 14.

In addition to cold rough water and challenging currents, the English Channel is also a major maritime shipping lane with large tankers and boats plying their way up and down the coasts of England and France. Here Bergman is in the foreground while a tanker heads north. She completed her swim in 13 hours 15 minutes.

The swim presents its own unique challenges: circumnavigating the Island of Manhattan via the Hudson, Green and Harlem Rivers requires tremendous strength, consistency, endurance and timing as the tides ebb and rise causing strong currents and cross-currents. Once known as the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, now known as the Twenty Bridges Swim, the swim is a difficult yet awe-inspiring event. Each swimmer is guided by an experienced kayaker as all three rivers are busy waterways.

"I'm nervous but excited. A river swim like this is something I have never done before but I trust my training and I know I will be ready," Bergman shared.

Bergman's swim on July 14 can be followed live by track.rs/abby and the whole race by track.rs/nyow The start time will around 9:00 a.m. EST. For more information or to contact Abby Bergman, go to www.abbybergman.com.
