EllisDon launches strategic collaboration report ahead of Mohawk College's Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation grand opening.

MISSISSAUGA, ON, May, 16, 2018 /CNW/ - Today, EllisDon launched 'The Journey to Net-Zero', a lessons-learned report for Mohawk College's Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation as the project nears completion.

Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation, Mohawk College Fennell Campus (CNW Group/EllisDon Corporation)

The industry report is a strategic collaboration document that details lessons learned during construction of the Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation located at Mohawk College's Fennell campus in Hamilton, Ontario.  The project is Ontario's first net-zero institutional building as well as the first pilot project under the Carbon Impact Initiative.

"As we transition global markets to a low carbon economy, we will need to showcase the projects that can lead the way for Canada's contribution," said Andrew Bowerbank, Global Director Sustainable Building Services, EllisDon.  "Mohawk's Joyce Centre is the pinnacle project that is demonstrating that Net Zero Energy is achievable, affordable, and a viable solution for long term operational success."

In 2016, EllisDon launched the Carbon Impact Initiative, an industry-led action plan in support of Canada's international climate change commitments. Industry executives, in collaboration with government leaders, established the initiative outlining strategies to transform the market toward a low-carbon economy.

"The Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation will demonstrate how a zero-carbon building can be planned, designed, constructed and operated," said Tony Cupido, Chief Building and Facilities Officer, Mohawk College.  "The 'Lessons Learned Report' is a testimony to the leadership that EllisDon is providing to its clients as we strive to meet our performance targets and give our students an exemplary learning environment."

Built in partnership with McCallum Sather Architects and B+H Architects, the building features numerous green elements including a variable refrigerant flow heat pump system, high-efficiency plumbing fixtures, a high-performance building envelope to maximize heating and cooling, as well as an abundance of natural lighting. Geothermal wells, storm water harvesting and a sensor-controlled LED lighting system throughout the building will also help bring the project to meet its net-zero goals.

"EllisDon's expertise is helping colleges implement significant measures to contribute to a green energy future for Ontario ? everything from net zero buildings to improving energy efficiency in existing buildings to training the next generation of green energy workers. This will make a real and measurable difference in reducing carbon emission throughout Ontario," Linda Franklin, President and CEO, Colleges Ontario.

The 90,000 square foot building will be an expansion of Mohawk College's technology department which is expected to increase enrollment from 1,000 to 4,500 students over the next five years.

The Centre for Partnership and Innovation is slated to open on September of 2018.
